Jim is the Principal Advisor, Drinking Water at Taumata Arowai and has worked in the water sector for 30 years, initially as a Health Protection Officer and Drinking Water Assessor before joining the Ministry of Health in 2005 to lead the $150M Drinking Water Assistance Programme and assist with the preparation of drinking water standards. Nine years as a Principal Environmental Scientist with Opus International Consultants assisting drinking water suppliers manage risk followed before he was Principal Water Quality Advisor with Water New Zealand.

Dr Kēpa Morgan is Pou Hautū (Managing Director) for Mahi Maioro Professionals Limited (www.maurimodel.nz) and a Distinguished Fellow of Engineering New Zealand. Kēpa’s team combine mātauranga Māori, science, and engineering technologies to evaluate ecosystem impacts using the mauri0meter. Our focus is the creation of monitoring systems for communicating changes in the mauri (life supporting capacity) of freshwater bodies, the mauriora (well-being) of Iwi and Hapū, and the holistic assessment of impacts resulting from municipal infrastructure and other environmental engineering challenges. Kēpa is a Fulbright Nga Pae O Te Maramatanga Senior Scholar. His work was recognised in 2016 with the Institution of Professional Engineers NZ, Supreme Technical Award for Engineering - Furkert Award Sustainability and Clean Technology. Kēpa has broad organisation leadership and governance experience having held Chief Executive roles with three Iwi, which have alternated with professional engineering and engineering academic roles as well as being the Associate Dean Māori for Engineering at the University of Auckland. Kēpa now lives on the southern shores of Te Roto Whaiti I Kitea e Ihenga I ariki ai a Kahu, and works from the extended family papakainga that he designed for his Hapū in the 1980s.

I am a freshwater ecologist specialising in lake ecosystems. My research focuses on freshwater ecology, aquatic biodiversity, and water quality. I aim to provide knowledge and solutions for environmental managers, kaitiaki, and stakeholders to achieve effective restoration and management outcomes.

Senior Scientist, Cawthron Institute, Nelson, New Zealand

Dr Wood’s research is multidisciplinary and integrative, with the overarching goal of improving knowledge on freshwater ecosystems. It spans three broad areas: (i) toxic cyanobacteria dynamics in freshwater systems (both planktonic in lakes and benthic in rivers), (ii) the development and application of molecular techniques to monitor and understand aquatic systems, and (iii) integrating cutting edge techniques with more traditional paleolimnological approaches to guide future lake management and restoration. She is considered a world expert on toxic cyanobacteria and has been involved with developing both recreational and drinking water guidelines for cyanobacteria in Aotearoa New Zealand. She received the Kilham Lecture Award from the International Limnology Society in 2022 for her contribution to freshwater research internationally. and the New Zealand Freshwater Sciences Society medal in 2019 for her outstanding contributions to freshwater science in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Jonathan (JP) is an analytical chemist and cyanobacterial ecologist at the Cawthron Institute in Nelson. His works spans both the harmful and helpful compounds that algae can produce, leading to projects in cyanobacteria risk management as well algal innovation. Jonathan has led or contributed to the various revisions to how we manage cyanobacteria in Aotearoa New Zealand over the last 10-years and his research in this area is drawn upon globally. Jonathan also has a passion for science communication and seeing effective communication strategies being employed in science programmes and in risk management.

He has 32 years' process design experience in municipal and industrial water and wastewater treatment, working for a variety of clients and projects nationally and internationally. He is involved in all stages of process design, development of project standards and principal's requirements, commissioning planning and assistance, incident investigations and troubleshooting, technical and drinking water safety reviews and assessments.
