Proposal to revise AS/NZS 1546.1:2008 On-site domestic wastewater treatment units, Part 1: Septic tanks

Standards Australia is consulting on a proposed revision to AS/NZS 154.6.1: 2008. The proposal is to mandate the installation of fixed security grates in septic tank openings with a view to preventing accidental drownings, facilitating safe maintenance practices, and promoting standardisation and compliance.
Water New Zealand provided comments to Standards Australia on 21st June. Our submission notes support for measures to prevent drowning of septic tanks. Our submission references existing provisions in standards and legislation to prevent this. We highlight that what is needed to prevent further death or injury is enforcement mechanisms of existing requirements.
